Personal Loan Cost: APR, Fees, Payment, and Total Interest

A personal loan’s monthly payment is only one part of its cost. Compare the APR, fees, repayment term, and total amount paid under the offer.

Updated October 14, 2026 · Educational information

A calculator can estimate payments for a fixed-rate installment loan, but the lender’s disclosure controls. This site’s estimate does not include origination fees or other charges unless you include them in the amount borrowed.

APR and interest rate are related but different

The interest rate is the rate charged on the loan balance. APR expresses the yearly cost of credit and may include certain fees. Ask what fees are included and compare the same loan amount and term across offers.

Look for fees and net proceeds

An origination fee may be deducted from the proceeds or added to the amount financed. If you need a specific amount in hand, confirm the net proceeds and the amount on which interest is charged.

Compare total cost and term

A longer term may lower the required monthly installment while increasing the time interest accrues. Compare total payments, fees, and whether the payment fits your budget. Ask about prepayment rules and late fees.

Read the disclosure before signing

Review the payment schedule and loan agreement. Verify rate type, due dates, fees, late-payment consequences, and whether there is any prepayment penalty. Do not rely only on a marketing payment example.
